Taiwan, Lian He Bao, 3 December 1999 -- TimeNet yesterday launched a service for Chinese domain name registration, providing registration for global Chinese web domains throughout Taiwan. Once a company registers for a Chinese domain name, users will only have to input the actual Chinese equivalent of the site on the browser to access the company's website. There are no formats or procedures, it is just like typing English domain names.

TimeNet stated that in the past, users have to input long and difficult chains of English domain name in order to access the sites. This has posed difficulties in using the Internet, as most of the websites rendered in English are very far from the companies' actual Chinese names. TimeNet has been appointed registrar for i-DNS.net International's Internationalized domain name system (i-DNS). Registration for global Chinese domain names is now opened. This service applies globally and includes both the simplified and traditional Chinese characters, hence a domain name is exclusive to every registration, and will not be repeated.

The company said that in order to prevent cybersquatters from over-registering domain names and selling them later at a premium, registration would take place in phases. Registration for '.com' (Chinese commercial domain names, e.g., ) is now opened, applicants must produce the relevant business licenses to register Chinese domain names which coincide with the respective companies.
