Dr.M.Anantha Krishnan, Vice Chaiman for the Task Force in IT, Govt of Tamilnadu, inaugurated the launch. Up to this point, Internet Domain Names have been in English only as they can only be registered in English. Therefore, even if the data contents in a web site is in Tamil the address name of the Internet Domain has to be in English. The restriction on the language used for Domain Names causes the non-English speaking to refrain from using the Internet, as they are not able to use the Internet with the same ease as the English literate.
With the aim of removing this restriction i-DNS.net International ltd started its research two years back and has developed a technology that helps to devise Domain names in languages other than English. Now the company has provided the technology in all Asia Pacific countries and they all use their native tongue in naming their Internet Domain Names. In India, Tamil is the first language where this technology is implemented because last year Tamil encoding system and Tamil keyboard design were standardised.
Dr. M.Anantha Krishnan, the former Vice Chancellor of Anna University who inaugurated the event said that this launching of Domain Names in Tamil would lead the people of Tamilnadu in e-commerce in an effective way. Now the Internet Domain Names in languages other than English are available in Chinese, Korean, French, German and Arabic. He made a request to the people to popularize the system.
The Director of i-DNS.net remarked that within a span of one year i-DNS has introduced the technology in 40 languages. In India, after Tamil, it intends to introduce this technology in Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
