Register.com to Launch Registration for Multilingual Domain Names
On November 10, Register.com Customers Can Register Names With Korean, Chinese and Japanese Characters

Online, CNN Financial Network Industry Watch, 6 November 2000 -- Register.com, Inc. (Nasdaq: RCOM), one of the leading domain name registrars on the Internet, today announced that register.com's multi-lingual domain registration service will launch on November 10, allowing register.com customers to register domain names with Korean, Japanese and Chinese characters in real-time.

As a participant of the .com, .net and .org registry's multi-lingual test-bed, register.com will be among the first registrars to provide multi-lingual registration capability directly from the register.com web site, allowing its customers to register domain names such as www.mybrand.com in non-Roman characters at the earliest point possible. The test-bed will initially support registrations for Japanese, Korean and both traditional and simplified Chinese characters, and is expected to eventually expand to support other characters, including Russian, Turkish and Arabic.

"This is a truly historic day in the development of a global Internet, and I'm proud that register.com is in a position to let our customers register multi-lingual domain names at their point of introduction," said Richard Forman, President and CEO of register.com. "The explosive growth of internet usage in non-English speaking countries has led to a new market need for reliable, multi-lingual names for Internet users and e-commerce initiatives world-wide. Multi-lingual registrations will not only create hundreds of thousands of attractive potential new domain names, but they will also enable our customers in the near future to reach out to their own communities and protect their established brands more effectively."

Previously, the Domain Name System (DNS) only supported domain registrations for Roman-alphabet-based domain names. On November 10, the registry test-bed will begin processing multi-lingual registrations through a technology that translates non-Roman characters into ASCII-compatible representations for the purposes of routing multi-lingual names through the existing DNS. While domain registrations will be processed in real time, domains are anticipated to resolve to IP addresses on the Internet at a later date to be announced by the registry.

As with other .com, .net and .org domains, multi-lingual registrations will be processed on a first-come, first-serve basis. Register.com will use technology developed by i-DNS.net, a leading provider of multilingual Internet technologies, to support its multi-lingual registrations.

Beginning November 10, register.com will also provide specialized multilingual domain registration services to register.com Corporate Customers, including high-volume registration, international brand protection and translation services for companies seeking to register trademarks and domains in Chinese, Korean and Japanese characters.
