VeriSign's Network Solutions Unit to Add Web Names

Online, CNET.com, 22 August 2000 -- Herndon, Virginia, Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- VeriSign Inc., which provides Internet security and registration services, said its Network Solutions unit will begin to register non-English Internet domain names.

Network Solutions' Internet-name registry will test the registration of domain names in languages other than English from 61 registrars, VeriSign said without specifying when.

In June, VeriSign finished its $15.3 billion purchase of Herndon, Virginia-based Network Solutions Inc., a specialist in registering online addresses with a 19 million-address database. Mountain View, California-based VeriSign said last month it wants to sell database services to companies and government organizations offering country-specific Internet addresses.

Network Solutions had forecast the market for Web addresses would total 160 million. The number could increase to 800 million once addresses in languages written with characters other than Roman letters and additional suffixes such as .shop are approved, VeriSign Chief Executive Stratton Sclavos said last month.

VeriSign also agreed last month to sell services with affiliates in Spain, Poland, Israel, Malaysia and Egypt, bringing to 28 its total overseas alliances. The company also is looking to start a Web site to link address buyers and sellers.
