eNIC Corporation Becomes First Registry to Offer Domain Names in Asian Languages

¤¬Ápºô, yahoo.com, 2000¦~8¤ë15¤é -- eNIC Corporation, the worldwide Registry for the Dot-cc Top Level Domain, today announced that it has launched its multi-lingual domain name Registry program.

This is the first time in the history of the Internet that any Registry has made domain names available in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The program, developed in cooperation with i-DNS.net International -- pioneers of the Internationalized Domain Name System (i-DNS) -- is accessible through eNIC's registration site, www.enic.cc, and through its major Asian marketing agent www.web.cc.

``eNIC has always been at the forefront of technological innovation in the domain name industry,'' says Brian Cartmell chairman and CEO of eNIC. ``We chose to use i-DNS technology because it does not require the end user to download special software. This development makes our products widely accessible and convenient to millions of non-English speaking Internet users. We also believe that the technology most closely represents the standard being adopted in the industry for multi-lingual domain name character sets.''

Registrants under the Dot-cc top level domain throughout Asia will have a choice to register their domain names in their own language, or English, or both. By year-end, eNIC plans to add Arabic, Thai and Tamil to coincide with its international marketing efforts.

Previously, domain names could only be rendered in English characters. i-DNS is built upon Unicode and currently supports more than 55 languages (including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, Hebrew, Russian, Thai and Tamil) and their respective multiple encodings. It is fully compatible with commonly used Internet browsers and inter-operable with the current Domain Name System (DNS).

``Dot-cc is rapidly becoming the universal domain name, and nowhere is that more important than in the Asia Pacific region where eNIC projects an explosion in the growth of domain name registrations ,'' says Matthew Guiste, director of Business Development. ``Adding the ability for users to enter domain names in their native language is an essential element in making that growth a reality.''

i-DNS.net International chief executive officer Michael Ng says, ``We have witnessed the excitement and success that multi-lingual domain names bring to our launched markets. With continual support and endorsement from established and reputable global players such as eNIC, i-DNS.net stands extremely well-positioned to offer this key enabling technology to everyone, everywhere.''
