Thai language standard

Online, TheNation, 4 September 2000 -- i-DNS.NET International, a US-based technology provider allowing the use of local languages for Internet domain names and e-mail addresses, is awaiting the decision of Thai authorities on the standard for the Thai language.

The company was told the standard should be decided in October this year after being postponed from July, said Edwin Tan, business development manager of i-DNS.net.

The National Electronic and Computer Technology Centre and the Communications Authority of Thailand are responsible for establishing the standard.

In addition to i-DNS.net, another company, ThaiURL.com, provides a similar service for the registration and use of domain names in Thai.

Tan said the i-DNS service facilitates registration and use of multilingual domain names not just in Thailand but also in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, India, Australia, the US and Egypt.

i-DNS first introduced its service in Thailand in February. Once the Thai-language standard is established, the firm expects to name Internet service providers in Thailand as registrars.

The service is now available for .com, .net and .org addresses. In Thailand, the service is provided via Loxinfo, KSC and CS Internet.

Tan said non-English Internet users currently comprise an estimated 40 per cent of Internet users worldwide. The number of non-English users is projected to increase to 60 per cent of total users by 2003.

Late last month, i-DNS.net also reached an agreement to provide key enabling multilingual technology to Network Solutions Registry, the world's leading provider of Internet locator services with more than 19 million names registered.

Thai-language domain names and content are expected to help increase domestic e-commerce while allowing Thai enterprises to benefit from branding in the local language.

Domain names in Thai should further the use of the Internet in Thailand. as a key reason the majority of the country's 60 million people cannot use the Internet is the language barrier.

He said the first batch of multilingual domain names in Chinese, Korean and Japanese will be used and seen world-wide in October. In the second stage, the domain names in Spanish, Portugal, Hindi, and Thai will follow suit around December or January next year.

As for the pure Thai domain names, an initial 10,000 names are expected to be registered in the first 6 months after the world-wide launch. This will make the Internet easier to use for non-English speakers, thus facilitating e-commerce and branding in Thai language.

Michael Ng, CEO of i-DNS.Net, said earlier that: "In the New Economy, domain names are virtual electronic brands and customers are going to appreciate the need for localized domain names in the local language.
