Software offers Asian domain names

Singapore, The Straits Times, 5 October 2000 -- NETWORK Solutions will begin offering web addresses in three Asian languages later this month for the first time in Internet history -- Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

The software that allows this comes from I-DNS.net International, a Palo Alto firm that evolved from a research effort at the National University of Singapore.

The company announced plans to register domain names in which everything to the left of the .com .net or .org can appear in characters in the three languages.

The 60 or so other companies that register domain names will be able to offer the Asian-language versions if they meet certain technological thresholds set by VeriSign, the California firm that acquired Network Solutions recently.

Asians have been registering domain names in record numbers.

Web pages can include text in virtually any language now, but the addresses used to find specific pages have been limited to numbers and Roman characters. Because of language barriers, some Asians have opted for all-number addresses that are easier for them to remember. --Washington Post Service
