People's Republic of China Launches Chinese Language Domain Names completely in Chinese Characters

互聯網, CCTV.com, 2004年11月1日 --

CCTV.com News (3pm News): For many netizens, remembering a string of English characters forming the web address can be a troublesome thing. To solve this problem, China's internet naming governing agency, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), announced that they will promote Chinese Domain Names.

Domain names are the addresses of web pages on the World Wide Web. Chinese Domain Names will be such addresses consisting of only Chinese characters. Having Chinese characters in domain names not only allows for easy remembering of web addresses, it also solves the problem of having similar-sounding company names disputing for a single romanized web address.

The Assistant to the Director General of CNNIC, Wu YangYi, said, "We have already established a framework of registrars nationwide, and we encouraged these registrars to be proactive in assisting corporations, in particular the small and medium enterprises, in setting up and understanding their domain name resources."

The launch of Chinese Domain Names will no doubt attract many corporations in registering their own Chinese Domain Names, hence China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) had designated Beijing, Shanghai etc, totalling 15 states and territories where Internet usage is higher as the pioneers in promoting Chinese Domain Names. There will be people to approach corporations to promote Chinese Domain Names, and posters and informational leaflets will be distributed. Organizations as well as academic institutions will hold seminars to promote Chinese Domain Names.
