Domain names going local

Japan, Nikkei Weekly, 15 May 2000 -- U.S startup i-DNS.net International will start issuing Internet domain names in Japanese by the end of the month, company sources said.

THe names can be written in Chinese kanji characters and the two Japanese syllabaries. Companies will be able to purchase domain names based on their corporate or product names for advertising and other purposes.

The use of Japanese language domain names is expected to help expand electronic commerce as it will make it easier for local Internet users to access commercial domains.

The U.S firm will set up a local joint vernture with partners such as Ascii Corp., Crayfish Co. and interQ Inc., which currently issue English language domain name in Japan.

The new company will sell names, valid for two years, ending in .kaisha(company), .soshiku(organization) or .netto(net) in Japanese characters for 10,000 yen each. The venture aims to issue 100,000 such names in a year.
