Japanese OK'd for Web address registrations

Japan, The Daily Yomiuri, 12 May 2000 -- Japanese characters can now be used for registrations of Internet site address, U.S. Web technology developer i-DNS.net International Inc. said Thursday.

The Palo Alto, Calif-based company, said Japanese is one of the 55 major non-English languages that its technology supports for domain name registration and that its technology is fully compatible with commonly used Internet browsers and the current Domain Name System(DNS).

Korean, Chinese, Spanish, German, Arabic, Thai, Tamil, Hebrew and Yiddish are among the 55 languages, i-DNS.net said.

Instead of using a domain name such as www.maiasa-shimbum.com, one can use Japanese characters in place of the Roman alphabet, including for ".com", which would be replaced be the circular full-stop sign used in Japanese and the Japanese kanji characters for company, or "kaisha", according to the company.
