India, Bombay Times (Mumbai Edition), 21 August 2000 -- Domain names can now be registered in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Last week, i-DNS.net, a web registration company announced domain name (Internet address) registration services in Hindi following the successful launch of domain name services in Tamil and Telugu. This means that multilingual sites which had their names in Roman English script can now register their names in the script of their local language.

Apart from English and the three vernacular languages mentioned above, domain registration has now spread to the registering of names in languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Arabic and Hebrew. The number of languages using which a person can register an internet address has now increased to 55 across the globe.

Speaking to the press, Prof. S. Subbiah, co-founder, i-DNS.net International, said,"With an exponential increase of internet user anticipated among non-English speaking people over the next five years, there is a need for companies and individuals to communicate in a language they are comfortable, to leverage the expansive opportunities that are available on the web."

The launch of the company's services, were graced by the presence of Pramod Mahajan, minister of Information Technology. i-DNS.net International is currently working in close consultation with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC), a division of India's Ministry of Information and Technology - and is responsible for the development of multilingual computing in India.
