India, Economic Times, 20 August 2000 -- Information and technology minister Pramod Mahajan has launched Internet domain registration in Hindi by the American website registration firm i-DNS.net International. The service was launched in Hindi after successful launches in Tamil and Telugu. Mahajan said the launch was important for the Indian market since it served the purpose of addressing a vast non-English speaking population in the country. Internet firms can register their names in 55 languages through the firm and this would include Hindi, Tamil and Telugu, Prof. S. Subbiah, cofounder of i-DNS.net International said.
