The Telugu doamin anems being a part of the multi-lingual internationalised domain names system, developed by i-DNS, co-exist with the current English domain names system. This breakthrough technology enables non-English speakers to accessm interact and do business on the Web in the language of their choice.
The technology integrates seamlessly with existing standard Internet software protocols. It is fully compatible with commonly used Internet browsers and interoperable with the existing domain name system.
LAunching the service here yesterday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said English had been the language of the Internet and in future it would not matter which language was used on the Net, as multi-lingual domain names and simultaneous translation would make the Internet a truly democratic medium.
It is estimated that in March 2000 there were 30.43 crore people online in the world, 72 per cent were in North America and Europe, Asia-Pacific accounted for nearly 23 per cent, while the whole of Africa accounted for less than 1 per cent. This will create a digital divide in the society in the future, warned Naidu. In order to avoid this, it is important that local languages like Telugu are given their rightful place in the wired world, he added.
With over 68 per cent of the world population being non-native English speakers, i-DNS seeks to bridge the gap that has previously hindered Internet access by such users, said S Subbiah, the founder of i-DNS. e-Namaskar.com, a division of Synfosys, will be responsible for the packaging, promotion and registration of Telugu domain names. "We will charge $0 for registration of a domain name as up-front fee for two years in addition to a one time processing fee of $10 and after wards we charge $35 per year, said Synfosys director Pranathi Reddy Sana. She said well-known companies should reserve their domain names in advance so as to avoid others getting them registered. In case of such a thing taking place, "we will not be held responsible," she added.
