i-DNS launches domain names in Tamil

India, Trinity Mirror, 7 February 2000 -- I-DNS.net International, a newly set up company headquartered in Silicon Valley, having a regional office in Singapore is in the business of registering domain names of languages other than English. Addressing on the occasion of the launch of Internet domain names in Tamil, Director Subbiah Subramaniam said that in the 12 weeks of Inception, the company has made inroads in 40 languages in the Asia Pacific region and was now coming to India.

The technology was however developed over a span of two years, and a number of interactions were necessary at the ministerial levels in various countries to ensure the latter's support for common encoding systems. The Asia Pacific countries including Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong, China had government who were aware of the need for a common encoding systems for the development of Internet activities. In India, the company is closely working with C-DAC, said Subbiah.

In India, the Tamil language had come but with a common encoding system and hence this was the first language of launch. This would be followed by other languages including Hindi, said S. Maniam in charge of business development.

The I-DNS technology is compatible with most browsers, and could be modified where it was not, he said. It was developed at the National University of Singapore under the auspices of Asia Pacific Networking Group (APNG).

I-DNS net international plans to provide language support in all major languages and penetrate the Internet world with strategic i-DNS servers located in Singapore, Japan, Korea, China, India, United States, United Kingdom and Australia. Backed by General Atlantic Partners, a global player in the IT investment business, the company will further widen the network by working in partnership with global connectivity providers like AboveNET and PSINet, where i-DNS servers are already co-located.
