Domain names in Tamil

印度, News Today, 2000年2月6日 -- Internet domain names can now be given in the Tamil Language. This is however the first step towards introduction of domain names in Indian languages. Telugu, Hindi Kannada, Marathi and other Indian languages are on the anvil, S Subbiah, director and vice-president, i-DNS.net International Pte Ltd has said.

Talking to press persons here yesterday, Subbiah said the US-based company, has been involved in developing domain names in languages of the Asia Pacific, from its regional office at Singapore.

The present development of domain name in Tamil was a result of two years of research and development undertaken by i-DNS at the National University of Singapore.

The company has already developed domain names in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. The technology developed by the company overcomes the restriction of registering domain names only in English alphabet and allows registration of names in over 33 international languages of which Tamil is the first Indian language.

Speaking about the technology, Subbiah, said that the technology is also fully compatible with commonly used Internet browsers. It is inter-operable with the existing domain name system.

D Subramaniam, business development manager, i-DNS, said that the idea of developing domain names in Tamil was mooted at the Tamil Internet conference held at Chennai, last year.

The decision to stick to two fonts in Tamil, to overcome the hurdle in the use of Tamil in the Internet, facilitated the development of this technology for the introduction of Tamil, he said.

Stating that Tamil had taken the lead in sorting the encoding problem by deciding to stick to two fonts, he said that similar problems on encoding in other India languages were being worked out by the respective States. In this regard they were working closely with C-DAC, he said.

The server for registering the domain is located at Sathyam. It was inaugurated on 14 January, he added. The registration fee would be similar to what is charged for registering domain names in English, he said. The registrations in Tamil would be activated on 1 March. Already 1,436 requests had been received to register names in Tamil, he added.

In Tamilnadu they have appointed 'Makkal Solutions 2000' as the registrar and 'Softview Computers' and 'Tamil.com' as sub-registrars. To register domain names in Tamil, one would have to approach them, or for online registration, the website www.makkalsolutions2000.com could be approached.

On future plans, he said that the company already had the technology to develop e-mail in Tamil, but would do so only if a request came to them.
