NSI launches universal domain name registration services tomorrow

Hong Kong, HK Economic Journal, 23 October 2000 -- Although Chinese domain names had been in the market for some time, it had failed to gain popularity due to technical limitations. However, NSI would be officially launching tomorrow a universally acceptable domain name system in support of registrations for domain names in Chinese (including Traditional and Simplified), Japanese and Korean etc. A rush for domain name registration is expected to the market again.

Reportedly, NSI would be offering registrations services for non-English domain names suffixed with .com, .net or .org in languages like Chinese, Japanese and Korean etc. i-DNS.net is the technology provider for NSI's new service. The CEO of i-DNS.net Mr Michael Ng revealed in an interview with our reporters that since the two companies signed an agreement in August, both parties had been conducting system testing to ensure non-English domain name system is universally operational. The tests were completed on 27 Oct and the service is now ready to be launched.

China Channel, a TLD registrar in China of similar ties with i-DNS.net, has already begun operations for in-advance registration for Chinese domain names last weekend.

According to cyol.net, by 4pm on the first day of the service launch, the total number of in-advance registrations is more than 30,000. A particular Taiwanese ISP registered more than 8000 domain names in traditional Chinese at one go.

Many in the industry pointed out that since NSI's non-English domain name system does not require any plug-ins to operate and is universally applicable, another round of mad rush for domain name registration is about to happen again.
