Those in the industry predict, China's eventual entry into the WTO plus the Chinese Government's efforts in developing its Western regions would create a much-needed demand for Chinese domain names from its foreign and local enterprises.
CEO of New Cyber International Limited, Mr Xie Denghong, said during the press conference yesterday that there are currently 23 million English domain names in use, and China accounts for about 280,000 of these names. He added that the promotion of Chinese domain name usage would encourage more Chinese to pick up on computers. He also said that China's eventual entry into the WTO coupled with the Chinese Government's efforts in developing its Western regions would naturally bring about a trend for foreign and local companies to adopt Chinese domain names, and the demand for such names would be substantial. Last year's statistics, he said, indicated that there are 890,000 Internet users in China, and this year the figure has ballooned to 16.9 million, which is 1.5% of China's population. He added that the number of Chinese Mainland users would expand rapidly which would boost the Chinese domain name registration industry.
CEO of i-DNS.net International Inc. Mr Michael Ng said both companies had made an investment of more than 5 million dollars and would be dedicated to the promotion of education in Mainland China in the future.
According to a recent Verisign report, China will experience a dramatic growth in Internet adoption over the next three years. There are currently 2 million Internet users in China, and analysts expect this number to grow five-fold to 10 million by 2001, and 200 million by 2007.
One of the factors, Mr Ng said, that has hindered the development of China's new economy in the global arena is the people's discomfort in using English as the primary language of communication in the Internet. Now, i-DNS.net's multilingual domain name technology would be able to facilitate the spread of Internet usage to the vast majority of the population.
He conjectured that with New Cyber's strong alliance network in more than 15 provinces in the Eastern, Western, Southern and Northern parts of China, both companies expect to increase the number of Chinese domain names by more than 100,000 over the next 12 months.
i-DNS.net has already made strategic alliances with companies from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, America and Australia in the promotion of its Chinese domain name registration services since the beginning of this year.
