Hong Kong, Ta Kung Pao, 23 March 2000 -- The Chinese domain name registration service launched in Hong Kong earlier this year is getting popular due to a recent surge in the number of Internet and E-commerce companies setting up their websites on the Internet.

According to latest figures given by the Hong Kong Network Information Centre, the number of English domain names registered in Hong Kong increased to over 30,000 in January this year.

However, English domain names have caused quite a bit of inconvenience to the the non-English speaking users at large.

Currently, Chinese domain name registration service is being offered by 3GNIC and HKNet in Hong Kong.

Chinese domain names can be registered using such suffixes as '.com', '.org' or '.net' in Chinese.

Industrialists have pointed out that since the Internet is a global media, using domain names ending with 'hk' will limit the domain names' servicing area as well as the image.

Many companies have registered their domain names using only the Chinese '.com' suffix, so as to avoid being too localised.
