HKNet Opened Up Chinese Domain Name Space

Hong Kong, HK Daily News, 14 January 2000 -- CCT Telecom Holdings' HKNet yesterday announced strategic partnership with i-DNS.net International, launching its multilingual domain name service, Internationalized Domain Name System (i-DNS), on the Internet using global domain name technology.

This collaboration will be targeting at the Hong Kong market, zooming in on a potential clientele of 27000 Hong Kong enterprises which have already registered their English domain names.

Charles Mok, deputy managing director of HKNet said that in future Chinese enterprises do not have to memorized English domain names. This service will also pave the way for Hong Kong based companies to take on the China market.

Currently, China has 8 million Internet users, but this number is expected to increase to five times within the next three years. Hence, Mok believes that the China market has unleashed potential.

He elaborated that HKNet will be providing support in domain name sales and marketing promotions, while i-DNS.net will be handling the technical and registration aspects.

Michael Ng, chief executive of i-DNS International said the Internet is a global service, and domain names should therefore also be multilingual. He also noted that the entire project took on a total investment of US$5 million (HK$38.7 million).

Ng said currently the collaborations does not restrict the number of registrars, and as such, the company has not rule out possibilities of striking strategic partnership with ISPs in mainland China to provide the same service.

Charles Mok pointed out that the company is currently seeking all ways to source for information websites to establish its status as Internet Content Provider. Purchasing and strategic partnerships are but methods in consideration.

Mok refused to comment on hearsay about CCT Telecom Holdings' bid in buying over local press Ming Pao's website.
