DOMAIN NAMES AND EMAIL ADDRESSES IN CHINESE CHARACTERS

Online, Sina.com.cn, 27 September 2000 -- China Channel (www.china-channel.com) announced in Beijing today that an agreement has been reached with i-DNS.net and i-EMAIL.net to impower China Channel the rights to adopt their multilingual i-DNS and i-Email technologies; thereby making the registration of .com, .net and .org TLDs and email addresses in Chinese characters possible. This has made China Channel the first premier ICANN accredited registrar to be able to do so.

Reportedly, the Chinese registrar will start handling global registrations for Chinese TLD names and email addresses from today onwards, and the registered names and addresses will be functional in October. The Top Ten Websites of China, namely sina.com, sohu.com, netease.com, Capitol Online, China.com, yesky.com, elong.com, m18.com, Chinabyte and ccidnet.com, are the first registrants.

As both i-DNS and i-Email technologies are based on the Unicode system, which is compatible with RACE, UTF-5, UTF-8 and other decoding systems supported by browsers and DNS worldwide, end-users need not download or install any other software to access the Chinese domain names or email addresses.

The Chinese email addresses come with an automatic forwarding function that can forward all email received in the Chinese mailbox to other mailboxes chosen by the user. This product is the world's first to be released by i-EMAIL.net.

Director for China Channel Mr Gong Shaohui said, "China Channel is dedicated to the promotion of China's e-Commerce industry and now cooperates with i-DNS.net International and i-EMAIL.net to provide services for the registration of Chinese domain names and email addresses. The advent of Chinese TLD names and addresses will eliminate the language barrier of the Internet to non-English speakers, and will revolutionalize the operations of small and medium sized companies and the propagation of emailing in China."

Headquartered in Xiamen, China Channel was established in 1996 to provide network solutions for e-trade and the first in China to be an ICANN accredited registrar. It is now the largest provider for China's e-commerce platform, and also China's largest special domain name registry.

CEO of i-DNS.net International Mr Michael Ng said, "China Channel is a strong establishment. Having it handle the registration of Chinese TLD names is a great achievement for the global usage of multilingual DNS technology. We believe the technology will truly and actively induce the globalization of the Internet."

Boasting long-term financial backing by General Atlantic Partners LLC (GA), the multilingual DNS Unicode system developed by i-DNS.net International supports 59 languages including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. i-DNS.net International officially launched Chinese domain names in China this May. The company has also gone into partnerships with NSR (the registry of the world's largest DNS company Network Solutions, Inc.); Melbourne IT (the world's second largest DNS registry); and eNIC (the international ccTLD company), in the promotion of multilingual domain name technology.

i-EMAIL.net, also financed by GA, is a multilingual internet solutions provider that caters to the global IT market.

"Email is the most popular function of the Internet, with a currency rate of 3 billion per day," said i-EMAIL.net CEO Mr Huang Zhaohui. "The Chinese language is the world's second most common language in use, and i-EMAIL.net is pleased to be able to work with China Channel to launch Chinese email addresses to better cater to the needs of the Chinese Internet community. As an independent provider of multilingual technology, we hope to work with companies worldwide that are interested to launch multilingual email addresses."
