i-DNS.net and NSI in Joint Promotion of Internationalized Domain Names

China, eNet, 4 September 2000 -- i-DNS.net International Inc. announced today a strategic alliance with NSI Registry, a subsidiary with the world's largest domain name registration company NSI (Network Solutions, Inc.).

Reportedly with 19 million domain names registered with it, the NSI Registry would invest in i-DNS.net's efforts to further develop its i-DNS multilingual domain name technology, and to jointly promote the registrations of .com, .net and .org domain names in languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic.

Backed by General Atlantic Partners LLC, the i-DNS technology developed by i-DNS.net supports 55 languages for the convenience of non-English speaking users. The evolving technology is adaptable and mature; and can easily comply with any domain name standards. Currently, it is compatible with RACE, and runs in full support of UTF 5, UTF 8 and other common decoding technology.

The NSI Registry would be setting up a platform for multilingual domain name technology and other multilingual decoding technologies in a bid to globalize domain names suffixed with .com, .net and .org; while i-DNS.net would be working with ICANN-accredited domain name registrars to offer worldwide registration services of multilingual domain names suffixed with .com, .net and .org.

One of the functions of the domain name system is to convert numeric IP addresses to easily remembered domain names, e.g. www.domain-name.com. However, there remains a language barrier. Although many websites are now in native tongues, their domain names remain in English. This spurs many websites to seek special domain names to convenience their users. For example, many has chosen numeric domain names since a string of numbers might prove easier to remember to the non-English speaking user than a domain name in a foreign tongue.

CEO of i-DNS.net Mr Michael Ng said, "It is unfortunately comic that many has chosen numbers for a domain name. i-DNS.net seeks to resolve this problem and our cooperation with the NSI Registry would allow more users to communicate in their mother tongue."

Senior Vice President of NSI Registry Mr Bruce Chovnick said, "As a registry for domain names with .com, .net and .org, we are responsible for making domain names resources accessible to people. We look forward to the continuing developments of the multilingual standards, and would persevere in the endeavor."

According to statistics, non-English speaking users make up 40% of the Internet community, and would increase to 60% by year 2003.

Mr Chovnick said, "It is our hope that in the near future, multilingual domain names would provide new opportunities for domain name registrars."

The largest domain name registrar in the southern hemisphere, Internet Names Worldwide, would be the first to provide Chinese domain name registration services; after which will follow registration services for domain names in other languages. The registration of Chinese domain names is a premiering service in the southern hemisphere and would greatly improve the ties and communication between Chinese communities around the world.

The Internationalized Domain Name System (i-DNS), as registered by i-DNS.net, has been successfully launched in China this May.

The Unicode-based i-DNS technology can now support 55 languages including Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Spanish; and is completely compatible with popular browsers and domain name systems. Utilizing the technology will eliminate the hidden pre-requisite of knowing the English language; which would help ease 68% of the world population who are non-English speaking into better using the resources of the Internet.

Backed by General Atlantic Partners, LLC, i-DNS.net was set up in October 1999. i-DNS.net has perfected, in their i-DNS technology, the connectivity of domain names in 55 non-English languages in coverage of 90% of the non-English speaking population and has had yahoo.com, China Bank, Sony, Cathay Airlines and more than 1 million other companies and organizations to register for their multilingual domain names.

CEO of i-DNS.net Mr Michael Ng said, "More and more companies are becoming aware of the importance of setting up a website; and that communicating with their clients in their mother tongue would call for closer ties. i-DNS.net's entry has been well-received. Our partnership with Melbourne IT demonstrates our dedication in making Internet resources accessible to all."
