Chinese can be used for registering web addresses

China, Beijing Economic Daily, 18 May 2000 -- Net users in Beijing can now register their web addresses in Chinese, with effect from yesterday.

Tai Xin Industrial Company Limited is the first to introduce internationalised Chinese domain name registration service in this city, by adopting the internationalised multilingual domain name technology of America's i-DNS company.

The multilingual internationalised domain name technology allows the use of Chinese in book-marking web addresses, keying in domain name, compiling addresses, compilation, design procedure, processing, viewing the contents of websites etc. The said technology supports Chinese e-mail and automatically switches between Simplified and Traditional Chinese characters.

Industry sources pointed out that apart from having a significant impact on the popularity of the Internet in China, Chinese web addresses would faciliate the close connection between e-commerce and the livelihood of the populace.
